Computer Services

The 'Pewter Guy knows computers (and some other stuff too...)

I offer basic computer services in your own home or office which include:

  1. Assisting you with hardware and/or software installation or setup problems. This includes fixing difficulties you may be having with that new printer or scanner you installed - or maybe that Windows XP upgrade didn't go so well after all. Do you want to hook up two or more of your computers to work together across a home network? Whatever it is, The 'Pewter Guy can help you with it.
  2. Helping you decide what kind of new computer to buy. This includes advising you about brands (IBM, Compaq, HP, Dell, Gateway, etc.) and models (what's a Pentium III or 4 versus a Celeron versus an AMD Athlon), the speed of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) (do I need a 1.5Ghz or a 3Ghz computer?) and such things as how much memory (RAM) to get, (is 128Megs enough - how about 256Megs or 512Megs or more?) how big the hard drive should be (what does a 200Gig or larger drive do for me that an 80Gig drive won't?), would a Flash Drive be useful, do you want to be able to 'burn' (record) your own CD-ROM's or DVD's, etc.
  3. Helping you upgrade your current computer. This might include getting a faster modem, upgrading to a larger hard drive (or maybe installing a second hard drive), adding more memory (RAM), adding a USB Hub, adding a faster CD-ROM drive, or adding a recordable CD (CD-R/RW) drive, upgrading your operating system from an earlier version of Windows (95, 98 or ME) to Windows XP (sorry - I don't do Mac's).
  4. Helping you purchase and use peripheral devices such as a wireless netowrk, digital camera, a scanner, a web cam (video camera), laser printer, inkjet printer, label printer, pointing devices (wireless optical mouse, trackball, etc.), or how about a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or hand held unit like a Palm or a Windows Mobile device?

My fees are very reasonable: $40.00 per hour for general computer services, ($35.00 per hour for University of Virginia colleagues) and there is a one hour minimum charge per home or office visit, with a minimum $20.00 travel charge if you live along my normal route to and from Charlottesville and my home in Buckingham County - or a straight mileage charge at the rate of 32.5¢ per mile if I have to drive somewhere else. I guarantee your satisfaction and offer net 30 day billing.

Click here to send me an e-mail, or call me at 434-286-2529 evenings and weekends, to set up an appointment. (Please note that I do this work on the side so we're talking about evenings and weekends unless I can make special arrangements to take annual leave from my regular job).
